Community Supported Agriculture and Food Stamps

An important part of the arguments I make in the book are about how poor people are denied access to food, even when they're not being denied access to food.

Take, for instance, the food stamp programme in the United States, where 36 million people went hungry last year. Food stamps are designed to ensure that working families don't run out of basic foodstuffs. Given the redlining of communities of poor people, supermarkets aren't going to come in and provide fresh fruit and veg. But processed food giants are only too happy to offer product that can sit on the shelves of corner stores for months before they're bought. ... read more »

Save Sustainable Agriculture in the US

This just in from Food First/Institute for Food and Development Policy.

PLEASE CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE'S AND BOTH SENATORS’ OFFICES IMMEDIATELY!!

On February 14, the Senate passed the "Continuing Resolution," which makes permanent funding decisions for the fiscal year already underway (Fiscal Year 2007), which wasn’t completed before the last Congress ended. Distressingly, this resolution would IMMEDIATELY eliminate funding for a program crucial to sustainable agriculture! The Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas (ATTRA) program is a highly rated national information service that answers practical questions from farmers and others across the US who call its 1-800 telephone number, print publications from its website, or attend its workshops. ... read more »

Take a Stand Against Vulture Funds

Jubilee USA Network * American Friends Service Committee * 50 Years is Enough Network * TransAfrica Forum

Action Alert - Tuesday, February 20, 2007

Call-In Today: Stop the Debt Vultures!

Call on Donegal International to Stop Taking Millions from Zambia’s Debt Relief

See www.jubileeusa.org

The vultures are circling! Right now, a private company is trying to scavenge a huge profit from Zambia, one of the world's poorest countries which has just benefited from debt relief. Please take action to prevent this.

** On Tuesday, February 20, call Debt Advisory International (DAI)’s Washington, DC office at 202-463-2188 and tell Michael Sheehan, the owner of DAI and Donegal International, not to take up to $20 million from Zambia! ** ... read more »

The Center for Food Safety (CFS) is a non-profit public interest and environmental advocacy membership organization established in 1997 by its sister organization, International Center for Technology Assessment, for the purpose of challenging harmful food production technologies and promoting sustainable alternatives.
